There’s no questioning that personal branding strategy, content strategy, social media strategy, BUSINESS strategy… all are crucial.
But what happens when you have a strategy and it’s not giving you the results you expected?
This year has been a fascinating one for me, observing both my own journey and those of my clients to see what it really takes to build a profitable personal brand. And while strategy was a given, it turned out there was something just as important, but often overlooked.
Turns out that for each pillar of my In-Demand Brand Blueprint (Get Clear, Get Seen, Get Heard, Get Paid, Repeat) there is an element that if, when missing, can sabotage the strategy and therefore the results.
So in today’s episode, I’m breaking down exactly what that element is so you can – hopefully – identify if and where it’s affecting you.

You’re listening to Episode 28. Beyond strategy, the keys to being seen, heard and paid. I have worked with a lot of people this year. I mean, obviously be on this YouTube, but specifically as a personal branding coach, and these people have ranged from being aspiring entrepreneurs. So just an idea or Balian idea through to service providers with over 20 years of experience. And I’ve obviously been able to study my own experience, like I’ve been analyzing my own brand and business journey during this time, too, and really looking at what was going on behind my strategy in order for me to actually see results or not see results. So here’s the thing. I love design, I love words, I love social media, podcasting, content creation, like it is all fantastic. But the thing that I have learned this year in particular is that it is completely useless if the other pieces of the puzzle aren’t in place. And that is what we’re diving into today. All of those other pieces of the puzzle.
Welcome to the personal branding project. I’m your host Kat Elizabeth and actor and personal branding coach who is obsessed with helping creative entrepreneurs like you build personal brands that change your life for good from attracting bigger opportunities, more joy and freedom in your life. And the ability to get paid to do the things that you love most. Each week, I’m bringing you inspiration, practical advice and the occasional dose of tough love. So you can stop dreaming and start doing what it takes to make those dreams a reality. Welcome back. So glad you’re here. And thank you for the warm welcome back to the airwaves last week as well, it was it was a little bit scary hitting publish after such a well, another long break. And the feedback from the last episode was wonderful. So I really appreciate it, I appreciate you for listening. So glad you’re finding it helpful. And I’m really hoping you find today’s even more helpful, because we are we are going a little bit deep today.
So as I said, I’ve been, I’ve had basically a year of I feel like I’m a bit of a research scientist. So while I’m trying to help everyone and help myself and do all these things, at the same time, I’m analyzing everything that’s going on. And I’m taking notes. And because of that, I think this is also why I was really led to revisit my own brand foundations recently, because I saw that branding was just it goes so much deeper. I mean, I’m talking about personal branding, here, it’s a little bit different to when you’re building a business brand. And you’ve got, you know, a whole company, or at least a whole team that is, you know, taking, taking the wheel basically like everyone’s got their roles. So you’re able to just guarantee that all these things get done. I mean, not that it always gets done. But when it’s a personal brand, when it’s just you, we are competing with so much more, there’s so many more things that are going into whether or not we actually implement the strategy that’s going to get us the results that we want. And when I started to notice that the strategy on its own, wasn’t holding up for so many people, depending on what they had going on. That is what we made made me go, okay, we need to tackle this differently. And it was a little I’m gonna say it was slightly frustrating, because it’s like, I put so much work into all of this strategy stuff. And I’m so proud of all my programs and resources and all of that it’s all good, it all works. But it only works if you’ve got your head in the game.
And so I when I saw that these these extra pieces of the puzzle that we’re going to dive into today, were such key pieces. I was like, right, I can’t, in my right mind move forward and only teach the strategy. And so the you know, you’ve probably heard me talk about the personal branding blueprint. So I had that, you know, clarity, confidence, consistency, communication and compass. And on a technical level, like yes, this is this is what personal branding is about if we don’t go deeper than that. I mean, yes, there was some mindset stuff thrown in. But it was mostly strategy based, but I decided to overhaul it. And basically created a new and improved framework, which I’m calling the indemand brand blueprint. So it basically is a complete fusion of the mindset pieces. I mean, it’s more than mindset, I want to say it’s almost on an identity level, pacing it with the strategy. Now I do have a freebie for this. Now, if you haven’t grabbed a copy, you can go to personal branding project.co slash blueprint, getting my I’m reading the URL, and I’m like my brain is just not keeping up audio. But I’ll include a link in the show notes as well.
Now this is so it’s basically the the indemand brand blueprint is laid out for you through this and there’s some exercises that you can do as you as you go along. But you don’t need it today to follow along with this episode, don’t stress, I’m going to break everything down for you properly. But you might want to grab a copy. So you can dive deeper into some of the things that come up from today’s episode as well. So let’s talk about the purpose of the indemand brand blueprint. And it really it comes down to the purpose of building a personal brand. I mean, I feel like basically everyone on the planet on the planet who is interested in building a personal brand, it’s to create some sort of reputation for yourself and visibility for yourself. So that you can attract the opportunities that are going to lead to your, you know, your big picture goals. And so for some people, the end goal could be getting a promotion, it could be building a business, it could be landing a TV gig, you know, it looks different for everyone. And you know, often there’s, there’s steps along the way, like a lot of the time, the the personal brand, then helps attract those stepping stone opportunities as well, that will eventually get us to the end goal. So that is why I created this indemand brand blueprint.
And the really the way I’m approaching it now, as I’ve kind of mentioned, it’s more holistic, all of the strategy is obviously there, it’s never going anywhere, but it’s been pacing together the other stuff that we need to have to make sure our strategy is actually successful. So there are five pillars to this blueprint, which is similar, like I had the five pillars of the personal branding blueprint, but where they go a little bit differently is that I’m actually kind of thinking about start to finish. So the entire journey of building a personal brand. So not just laying the foundations, which is kind of how I approached the personal branding blueprint is like let’s lay all these foundations, and then you can get on with your business. Whereas this is like into integrating your your business and your ongoing activities and how they kind of fit in with your personal brand. So let me just quickly run through the the pillars, but then I’m going to go back, and what we’re going to do is break down the roadblocks that can come up at each pillar and why you may not be succeeding with your strategy within that part of the game.
Because something else is missing. So the five pillars are get clear. So this is really the vision for your brand and business. So who do you serve? What’s the transformation you’re offering? What’s your, you know, USP? Like what’s your what, what makes you different, you know, what makes you qualified, all of those kinds of things that help us really establish like, where you’re going to position yourself in the market, the next pillar is get seen. So this is your visibility strategy, how you actually going to get found by your dream clients, or you know, it could be employers or producers or you know, whoever is that person that is going to help you achieve that bigger picture goal. pillar number three is get heard. So this is about you becoming known as the go to expert in your niche. So this is where we really dial in your messaging, make sure you are known for something specific, you know, being an expert versus being a jack of all trades, the next pillar is get paid. And now, not everyone might be seeing this as their end goal to get paid part, it might actually be like, get that contract, like land that TV opportunity or, you know, but I want you to say get paid is like the payoff for all of the work.
So, you know, for most of us, I would say being paid well, for your expertise is the key. And so if you’re in more of a corporate space, obviously it’s making sure that you know, the the person hiring you recognizes your expertise and your contract actually reflects that. For someone like Sir, I think for a lot of my audience, you’re very entrepreneurial like me, even if you’re side hustling that’s still entrepreneurial. And so you’re looking to be paid well from your clients. So you don’t have to overbook yourself, you want to actually get paid enough that you can have the business you love that just supports the lifestyle you’re looking for. And then finally, the fifth pillar is repeat. So it’s about showing up consistently enough to see the benefits of compound interest. I have definitely talked about compound interest multiple times on this podcast before we’ll probably talking about it again in the future because it relates to just about everything but that is what we finished with repaid because all of these things need to be in place and then it’s about obviously showing up but then also sometimes revisiting like actually going back to the beginning and going okay, let’s have a look at get clear again, is this to what we want to achieve are these still the people I want to serve? Is this the right offering for me, etc.
So I’ve given you a little rundown and as I said, you can always get the freebie so personal branding project.co slash blueprint, if you want to get your hands on the actual workbook, but let’s now just dive into the missing piece of the puzzle or the thing that could be out of alignment and not allowing you to get where you want to go. So the I’m kind of referring to this, like, as I said, it’s not just mindset. mindset is, I feel like mindset is still kind of a thought space. Whereas when we go deeper, it’s more about identity and self worth. And I have managed to find, I’ve identified it, thanks to my own journey, you know, I love to be my own guinea pig for all of this, but then also, through so many of my clients, I’ve been identifying the key bits of misalignment or that lacking self worth, that kind of shows up in these different pillars, that could be kind of sabotaging your success, really. So let’s start with get clear. So, as I mentioned, so this is the vision that you have for your brand and your business.
Who are you? Who’s your client, your or your ideal audience? What is the transformation as in what is that value that you uniquely offer? Now, where we can get stuck here, and happens very early on sometimes is that a lack of self worth can lead to us not even believing that we can do the thing that we want to do. So while we are making that plan for our business, or for our brand, we’re like, Come on now, like, you’ve already got enough, like you’re being ungrateful, like you have a job, or you already have clients. So who are you to dream even bigger than this? Also, how would you even do it? Are you even like, equipped to take things to the next level, or should you just like, just be glad to be grateful for where you are right now, and just know that, you know, other people, they’re worse off than you. Now, that is always the case, like, we, we do need to be grateful. Because unfortunately, you know, if you’re listening to this right now, then you probably have it better than most people on you know, like, then then a huge percentage of the population.
So this is never about being ungrateful. But this is about you, knowing that you were probably destined from all that, you know, if you were someone that quit your job to then go be self employed. And then now a feeling like, resentful, like you’ve created this prison of your own making, like, you just feel trapped. And like, you know, you’re just like, every time you get an email, you’re being triggered by it. And like it’s it’s triggering anxiety, then basically, if you’re trying to then just accept that for as it is, like, what was the point of you quitting your job in the first place. So I wanted to give you kind of a tangible example of this showing up and how you might know that, that you are kind of blocking yourself blocking your growth. So let’s say you actually have a steady stream of clients. So you are actually working with clients, you might even be booked out. But they’re not dream clients, they don’t light you up, like you’re not excited about working with them. Maybe it’s all over the place, like you work with people in all different industries, like you haven’t niched down because you’re like, I just need to take everything that I can get.
And so you’re scared to even sit down and work on things like your ideal client avatar, like scared to niche scared to hone your offering and make it more specific, or potentially, obviously, like, raise your prices. You know, because you’re worried that what if then I end up with no clients, like I don’t want to rock the boat? Like I’ve got it good people are paying me to do this thing. I’m self employed. So technically, aren’t I winning? Like have an I already done good work? And so you just you stay here, you just start looping. You know, you have moments of that resentment and feeling really tired and burnt out and like how much longer Can I do this, but then you have like a little boost and you’re like, oh, but it’s good. I should just be grateful at least I’m working from home, you know, and, and so on and so forth. Now I can speak to this because I was there for a very long time. Like this was a good chunk of my copywriting Korea.
It was just amazing how quickly after becoming a copywriter escaping the nine to five hell I mean, if you know me, I kind of wasn’t typical nine to five like I’d been working in musical theater then I quit that. Then I ended up working in real estate and then getting a job in an ad agency and everything was just feeling like a nine to fiver. So I was like, I have to get free. And then like within, I don’t know, six months of being full time as a copywriter. I was resenting everything like I was just I said yes to everything. And I was like, but you should be happy. You don’t have a boss. Well, it felt like every one of my clients felt like I had like 50 bosses because every client was my boss. And my gmail account was just like giving me so much anxiety. It was not fun. circling back around to what what is the thing that’s getting in the way is that I was really struggling to believe it could even be better and that I should be like, just grateful for as much as I had done already, because it was still better than someone else’s. But what I really encourage you to do is just like go go deeper.
Do you truly like do you believe you are worthy of actually being happy? Do you believe that you know, like, we look at look around There are people that are self employed, that are feeling free, that are working with the people that they love that they are, they are specific, they are niche down and they’re blowing up, you know, that can happen. We need to question like, do you believe that you can make that happen for you? Why not? Like, why couldn’t you do that? What like if you’re not some special snowflake who is exempt from being able to do these things? So I want you to start really going, why did you originally do this in the first place? Like, what were the things that you’re looking for? When you quit your job? or whatever, you know, or when you started your side hustle? Have you stopped fighting for them? Have you just decided to settle?
Because that’s not okay. I’m not okay with that on your behalf. I don’t think anyone should settle settle means we know we’re capable of more, but we’ve decided not to go after it anymore for some reason. And I know, after a year like this, it can feel like you know, well, just having any money is great. And yes, it is like, if you’ve been able to keep a roof over your head and food on the table, you are doing incredibly well. But that doesn’t mean you’re not worthy of more of actual abundance and being truly excited about what you do. So I’m hoping that if any of this has been resonating, it’s going to shake you up a little bit and make you question whether you are settling, and whether you need to do a little bit of work on yourself worth so that you can get back to believing that you are capable of more and worthy of more. Okay, that was a lot on one, Angola. So we’re gonna we’re going to speed it up now.
Okay, the next pillar was get seen. So as I said, getting found by your dream clients easily. So what can get in the way here, and it’s like, there’s always layers to this. So one of the first things is perfectionism. And so, so many people I work with self confessed perfectionist, so they’re like recovering perfectionist, and that basically just means like, like, I can’t put it out there until it’s ready. It’s not ready, I don’t look good enough on camera, I don’t have the benefit, good enough equipment, the designs off, you know, my captions aren’t good enough, you know, but really, let’s think about this. Is it that it’s not perfect? Or is it that you’re worried that maybe it’s going to be judged? You know, maybe there’s this fear of what happens when you put it out there? And what people might say? Or maybe there’s thoughts going through your head of like, Who am I to even do this? Should I even put this thing out there? Like, we can, you know, say that it’s about how we look on camera, but then launching a YouTube channel, I can again, speak from experience, the thoughts come up of like, Who do you think you are? To be talking about this stuff as if you’re an expert, and have people listening to you like, they’re going to figure you out so quickly? They’re going to know you’re full crap. You know nothing.
Or, you know, like, for me, specifically, I was talking about acting, and I’m like, I’m not a famous actor, who am I to be talking about acting and my career, you know, and then, but, you know, you start publishing content, and then it starts to help some people. And then you’re like, Oh, that’s right. There’s a bigger picture here. Like, this isn’t just about me, this is about how I’m going to be of service to other people. So the signs maybe, I mean, I’ve used a couple already, but signs that maybe you are letting you know, your your limiting beliefs get in the way of you putting yourself out there. So let’s say you’ve always dreamed of speaking on punk podcasts, but you have never pitched yourself. Like you’ve never just even tried, like it hasn’t even entered your mind to go speak on podcasts, even though you’ve like, you listen to them. And you’re like, oh, that’d be so fun. I’ve got so much I could say, I’d love to have one of those conversations. And then you’ve never actually reached out to anyone with a podcast and said, I would love to speak on your podcast. Or maybe you have just a ton of ideas for your own YouTube channel. But you’re like, I can’t get in front of the camera.
Like who like, look at me, I don’t I’m not I don’t have a vase for camera. So these are just signs that we’re letting these thoughts get in the way of us doing bigger things. And like, how to think about it like you get on a podcast, and you’re potentially speaking to hundreds, thousands 10s of thousands of people don’t mean to freak you out. It can be really big, but it can also be really small, at the small ones can be just as powerful. And these are potentially people who’ve been waiting to hear your message that really need your help, and they hear your story. And suddenly they’re like, Oh, I’m not alone. He understands me, she understands me, you know? So who are you to be actually determining whether whether or not you should be on these things when there are people out there that need you. This is the ego getting in the way do you say? So this is one that I want you to think about? Like Have you been thinking that, Oh, I’d love to do this thing. I’ve got these ideas, but you just keep coming up with excuses about why’s like why now and then like not the right time. I’ll do it when I’m less busy. But really, if you had full conviction that it was a thing that you needed to do and it was going to be a good idea.
Let’s be honest, you would find the time. That’s what we do. Not saying it’s easy as a content creation, like it takes a lot of time and effort. But you do make the time if it’s something you really want to do, moving on to get heard. So this is a like, particularly scary one because no one likes to think about, like, they never think about themselves as thought leaders, obviously, like that’s would be so egotistical to be like, Yes, I’m a thought leader in my space. But the fact is for you to build a personal brand and become known as an expert in your niche, well, then, that is just intern like that is thought leadership. And really, everyone is a thought leader, like we can be like, you share your opinions, you put them out there, like you’re, you’re a thought leader, like it’s, you know, I know, it’s got connotations attached to it and everything. And we, we think that thought leaders are people doing TED Talks, but that’s not how it has to be. So we have to like, if you want to become known, you obviously you need to be seen as an expert, you need to stand out, you can’t be the same as everybody else.
Like when we look to experts, they have unique opinions. Okay, so they’re actually saying things that may be unpopular to others, like so some people agree with them, some people strongly disagree with them. So that is a terrifying thing. And so where we get blocked here, who, in so many ways, but imposter syndrome, and because again, who am I like to be talking about these things, like I’m not an expert, and then fear of being called out as well or offending people. And you know, that can that can be, you know, usually we say like people pleasing is generally a sign of low self worth. So it all comes back to worthiness, like this is, like, you’re probably noticing themes right now that all of this is connected, it just shows up in different ways. We have different like, kind of signs of it happening, symptoms, I guess. And so for instance, like this is an example for you of where you may be blocking yourself. So let’s say you do actually have really strong opinions about what’s going on in your industry, about some kind of injustice, or where people are being ripped off, or you just like disagree on a certain approach that so many people are selling right now.
But instead of saying anything about it, you just create vanilla content, or you create no content at all, you’re like, it’s totally safer, I just keep my mouth shot. So you don’t put anything out there. And guess what happens when that when you do that, when you you know, don’t do anything, those people that you disagree with our out there landing clients that need your help, but they’re going to be like, signing up for with somebody else, because they heard from them. Like they had a voice that cut through, like they were standing out somehow in a in a crowded newsfeed and you didn’t you didn’t stand out, or you just didn’t even show up at all. That’s a problem. And so we really do have to think about, again, like if we can put our audience first like, I guess this is the big tip that I want to give you because I have I fought all of the things that I’m talking about today. It’s not just from my clients, it’s from me, if you can somehow put your audience first and think about like it really come at this from a place of service.
And going like there are people out there that actually do need my help. They’re struggling, they’ve tried other things, and it hasn’t worked. If I don’t allow myself to be found by them, and tell them what they need to know, then they’re just going to keep going on like this, they’re not going to get the help that they need. I mean, I know they may like there are other people out there. But like, Don’t you want to be the one that helps them. So we really need to make sure that we can somehow get over ourselves long enough to start creating, like, if you aren’t going to create content, it needs to have an angle, like it needs to come from you and your true beliefs. It needs to reflect your values and your experience. It can’t just be like five ways to feel better after like not getting enough sleep like that is that’s not life changing stuff. It’s not going to change the life of your audience, probably. And it’s not going to change your life. Like if you really want to build a business that does like on a personal brand that really does create all of the abundance that you have been dreaming of, then you have to play a bigger game.
It’s I know, it’s sucks. I don’t want to say that. It’s not that it sucks. It’s It’s scary. And it’s tough. And as if you listen to my episode a couple of episodes ago, you know the one before I disappeared again, where I said if building a personal brand feels comfortable, you’re not doing it right. Well, that is the truth. Unfortunately, I know I’m doing the good job. And when I say good, I don’t mean good. Like oh a plus, I know I’m doing the work I need to do if I’m feeling uncomfortable. Even recording even though I love recording podcasts, there is a level of discomfort involved coming up with the right ideas, worrying that I’m going to say the wrong thing. putting it out there knowing it’s imperfect, like it’s tough and it’s scary. And but then I just get over it and then the feedback comes in saying, Oh my gosh, I needed to hear that. Thank you. It just came at the right time. You know, thanks for being so honest. Like, it’s so refreshing and like, Okay, cool. I’m doing something, right. I’m just gonna keep going without crying, but you know that it gets a bit that way sometimes and being fully transparent with you, because that is my MO. Anyways.
So really question, are you playing it safe? Are you playing it safe with your content, or by not putting content out there? Or you know, and it doesn’t have to be you creating content on your own platform? This could also be you going on a podcast interview, and then just keeping it surface level? Okay, are you having the tough conversations, you’re letting people know what you truly believe? Are you standing for something so that you can therefore fight for other people? Or are you just trying to play the game? Okay, moving on to pillar four, which is get paid. So this is about being paid well, for your expertise. So you don’t have to overbook yourself? So you might think like you’re like what I am getting paid? It’s a better hourly right than when I was you know, in corporate or you know, waiting tables, but do you get that money and you’re like, Oh my gosh, this is incredible. Like I’m this I’m I’m doing it? Or you like now the day another dollar? Because sometimes that could be a sign that maybe you’re not actually charging enough. And I said about the overbooking yourself.
So what can happen what happened to me and what I’ve seen happen to some of my clients, a couple of current clients, we’re working through this right now. Is that okay? Yeah, you’re charging, okay? But for you to create the financial freedom that you’re wanting, you have to work crazy hours. So for me, like, I had this amazing year, I was so proud of myself, I can’t wrap flows year two or year three with my copywriting. It may have even been year two, where I did I did about six figures. I think we’ve got you know, I don’t talk about money that much. That’s one of that’s my thing. I need to get over that. But I remember and I didn’t make all my money from copywriting that year full disclosure, like I believe I landed a cart like a commercial or two. So I had a little bit of extra padding from some other work. But I made a really decent income from just doing copywriting, which is awesome, very proud of myself, because I more that year than I did when I was in Jersey Boys. But I was working ridiculous hours. So I was doing a six to seven days a week. And some days, I would do 12 hours easy, because I just was saying yes to everything. I was popular. And this is another sign. So everyone was saying yes to my proposals.
I thought it was a lot of money. Obviously, it wasn’t enough because you shouldn’t have people saying yes, every time. Obviously you should have high conversion rate, you know, that’s a sign that you’re doing well with your sales, but with your actual sales strategy. But if you are having everyone say yes to your proposals, you’re actually under charging. And so I would just get yeses all the time. And I would overbooked myself, I would have all these overlapping projects. Remember one week, I was juggling nine copywriting projects at once. Nine, how is that even possible. And it really cost me a lot like physically, mentally, emotionally. And so that was all down to like I was scared to say no to anything. I was scared to put up my prices, I was scared to niche down, like so much stuff. And so that’s why I’m talking about we need you to get paid well, so that you don’t have to overbook yourself. It’s not just enough to go self employed. And then you have people pay you like that’s great. But like you need to be getting paid enough that you’re actually achieving your dreams, not just like working another day job. So the stuff that can tie in here is okay, so there is money work to be done. So I haven’t talked about this much. In fact, I’m going to she doesn’t know it yet. But I’m going to invite her on the podcast.
I hired a money coach this year, who has been helping me work through my money stories. And again, this is a lot of this comes back to self worth. But also money stories. So our relationship with money starts when we’re born, basically. And it’s deeply ingrained. And so if you were brought up in a household that just like loved money, that like money comes easily generous, it’s always flowing, then there’s a good chance that you’re experiencing something similar right now. But if you grew up and money was the devil, you know, if money was the root of all evil, if only like if rich people are horrible people or you have to work your butt off to to earn any money like money can’t come easily if those were the stories that you were told when you were a kid and like I don’t even mean literally told you absorbed it around you. It’s probably reflecting in your life now. So I have I’m on a massive journey to work through all my money stuff. There’s layers and layers of it. I’ve overcome so much very proud of myself. But there is still so much more work to do. There’s a lot of shame connected with money. But then also like there can be the imposter syndrome too, like we, if you don’t truly believe that you’re offering something of value, if you’re worried, you know, good enough at what you do, then you also might be scared that you’re overcharging, like, you know, I’ve got clients who maybe they feel under-qualified because they don’t have like, the traditional experience that maybe someone else has.
So they’re like, how can I justify charging this much, and this is where the danger is of attaching our worth to our like, you know, pieces of paper, like qualifications and things like, we have to really understand the transformation that we take our audience through our clients through, which is obviously in that get clear state. And this is what I mean about sometimes having to circle back to the other pillars is like, we might uncover all this stuff with the get paid pillar, and then realize, Oh, I need to fix my office, I need to actually serve a different kind of clients, because the clients that I’ve been serving, are never going to pay full price, they’re always going to haggle with me or something like that. So it’s, um, it’s this ongoing cycle, which I know for some people like what, like, I want this to be one and done. But like, you’re not one and done, you’re like you’re a human, you don’t want to done neither is your business, it’s never gonna be one and done. You know, career is you know, just like stay stagnant. The second you become stagnant, like it’s all over. So I want you to get excited about this. I’m speaking to myself right now as well, because because I’m going through my own level of frustration of having to slow down in order to relay some of these foundations. So just know, I feel your pain, I’m there with you. But anyway, so let’s bring it back to the get paid. So a simple example of you maybe need to do a little bit of money work would be something like, you know, you want to help as many people as possible, obviously. So you’re like, I’m gonna keep my prices the same year after year. But then you end up having to work longer days in order to hit your revenue targets, like maybe every year, you want to earn more money, instead of putting up your prices, you’re like, I just have to work harder. That whole need to work harder to earn more money thing there is a it’s a bit broken.
Yes, we we do work very hard. as entrepreneurs, there is a lot of hard work involved. There’s a lot of extra work in those earlier days, those first couple of years of laying foundations. But there’s not this direct payoff if like if I just put more blood, sweat and tears into this, I’m going to get more money. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. If it works that way. Then when I was working my hardest I was burning myself out the most I should have been the richest. Well, that does that does not add up. I was definitely not the richest when I was working the hardest. This money work. As I said, it’s it’s ongoing. But it’s something to be aware of. So just just flag it with yourself. You know what happens? Like if you think about putting up your prices? What’s the physical reaction that you have? Like? Do you get like a contracting feeling? You’re like, Oh, I feel sick? Or like, what are the thoughts that immediately go through your head, oh, everyone’s gonna say,
No, I’m gonna run out of my client, I’m going to be out of business, I’m going to go have to get a job. You know, it’s important for us to understand this. And it’s important for us to go way back in time and try and understand why we feel the way we do about money and why we might be scared to just earn our worth. So that is get paid. And we’re now up to the final pillar, which is repeat. Now, this is an interesting one, because this is where it’s all about showing up consistently. Because the consistency over a long period of time ends up creating this wonderful compound interest effect where you actually like get more and more results without actually doing more work as in, it’s not harder work, you just keep showing up. And so that can be like you know, you having more leads come come in. When you sleep like you, you YouTube channel keeps growing because the video videos you’ve created in the past, it could be the word of mouth gets out about your business, more and more people are coming to you without you doing anything different. Okay, but to do this, we have to be consistent. And so here is where things can go wrong.
A lack of self belief can sometimes mean that we don’t pay attention to the fact that we’re burning out we’re working too hard. So we don’t hire help. We like there’s that scarcity mindset that comes in like I can’t hire anyone to help me because I don’t have enough money or I can’t hire a coach, because I don’t have enough money. And then you get stuck in this loop of never having enough money, nothing actually changes. I love that quote, if nothing changes, nothing changes. Think about it. How do you expect to be in a different position next year, this time next year? If you don’t do anything differently than you did this year? What is going to be the thing that actually leads to change. So you know if if you’re just stuck in this loop of overworking and all but I can’t afford it, you know, you’re not going to get out of that loop of overworking until you start to do things that free up your time and allow you to maybe like maybe you will be able to serve more clients but you won’t be doing all the admin because someone’s helping you out another sign that things are out of alignment, being just overbooked.
So, all Sorry, I guess that cause these issues are being over booked. means that you actually never have time to create the systems or strategy, they help you get, like, move forward. That’s like that’s a huge one, because systems and strategy can actually help you free up all this time and be way more consistent. But because you’re so overbooked, you’re really inconsistent with everything that you’re doing, like you show up on social then you disappear because you’re so busy. And then, you know, and how do you expect to see those results? Like if you show up inconsistently? You know, you put put all this effort into a couple of posts thinking it’s going to change everything, and then nothing happens, then you get this like feedback loop of like, Oh, well, it doesn’t work. But we see the results. When we show up consistently, I mentioned that in my last episode, as well, like all the stuff that I did inconsistently this year led to no results or inconsistent results. Another thing that can lead to us not being consistent, is not believing in your strategy. So maybe it’s just out of alignment, maybe the strategy is out of date, or you’ve pieced it together with like lots of little bits and pieces you’ve picked up over time, and you don’t fully believe it’s actually going to work. So therefore you just don’t see it through consistently.
Or you know, you just don’t fully know what you’re doing. You’re like, I think like someone said that this is what I should do. So I’m just gonna show up. Well, that’s not a strategy, not is not a strategy at all, relying on motivation and energy to determine whether you whether you show up. So if you’re kind of someone that’s like, Oh, I’m just gonna like, I’m very like energy based. So I’m just like, want to have the right energy, I’m just going to show up and do these things. That’s not a guarantee of you showing up because sometimes you can feel great, sometimes you won’t feel great. And what if on the days, where you feeling great, you already have all this client work to do. So creating systems and strategy, allow us to understand when we do have energy and how to harness that energy and use it really wisely. And so I had someone asking about that, because I was saying that, you know I am, I don’t have a lot of energy a lot of the time like I only have a couple of really good days a month like So how am I meant to show up consistently, I was like, well, that’s where knowing yourself, knowing your energy levels, knowing your client work. And building out a strategy that works with that is going to make all the difference. Like for instance, batching.
Like if you know, you’ve only got one really good day of energy a month, make sure that is the day where you need to do the high energy tasks like showing up on videos, record all of them while you’re feeling wonderful, you’ve got your makeup on, you got your nice top on. And then you can go back into hibernation mode and just do all the admin and all the other behind the scenes stuff the rest of the time. Sounds really simple. But yeah, what what can happen is that we completely ignore our natural needs our energies, natural bodies, I guess, natural energy cycles. And so you know, depending on our our makeup, I’m not going to get into all the anything gender related, what I’m going to say is that some people naturally have like an energy cycle that is like a 24 hour type one, or some of us have more of like a 28 day type cycle so that you know, we have good weeks and bad weeks. So we actually if we can build our businesses and our content, strategies and everything, knowing that ahead of time, it’s less like pushing a mud uphill, when you try and go to do these things. I have definitely spent, like so much of my career, trying to do things on days where I’m not feeling up to it because I put it on the calendar, and it didn’t serve me because I procrastinate, I’m really slow, I don’t do good work, I may end up going and doing it another time anyway, like I’m just sitting there just like just dying going, I just don’t want to do this. So how How different would it be if we were able to just say, you know what, I’m gonna do that another day, when I feel good.
Today, I’m going to do something else, or I’m going to do nothing. But again, we let’s bring it back to worthiness and scarcity and an older things like if you believe that if you stop work for a second, it’s all gonna fall apart and the clients are going to dry up and you’re going to fail at life, then, of course, you’re not going to stop, you’re not going to listen to yourself, you’re not going to slow down you’re just going to go go go go go because that’s what you believe you need to do. So as I said, like the repeat this this step is the kind of the worthiness piece but then there’s also going okay, like how am I going to make sure that I break this loop? How can I actually carve out the time to make sure I’ve got systems I’ve got strategy, I somehow get the right kind of help that I actually need so I can stop living Groundhog Day, which is what happens to so many self employed people. Once we have clients it just it’s Groundhog Day, there’s this feast or famine type thing. Again, speaking from experience where you don’t know where the next leads are coming from because you haven’t set up the strategies for yourself. So you’re like, you know, you don’t not pulling in leads while you sleep. you’re relying on word of mouth referrals and you showing up and being high energy at networking events and things like that. And so therefore, when people want to work with you, you say yes to everyone and uou get really over booked.
And then you don’t have time to set up the systems and the strategy to make sure you are generating leads on autopilot. And then there’s the panic that kicks in when those leads to like, you’ve got a dead period. And so then you start to freak out. And you start thinking, oh, maybe I should do some content. And I’ll do this, and I’ll do that. So you’d like half do some stuff, then more opportunities come in. And because they were random, and you didn’t know if they’ll, you know, if any more were gonna come, you say yes to them, and the cycle continues. So even though Repeat the word repeat, you know, it was pillar number five doesn’t sound super powerful. Do you see that this this final pace, like this is like, this is the final piece of the puzzle like you, you get this sorted, then you start to scale. All of the other pillars, like it’s still very foundational, it’s essential, we’re gonna keep looping back on them and growing and growing. But that repeat is the key to us actually building businesses that support the lives that we want. It’s the key to having that peace of mind and knowing that like,
Oh, I don’t have to be hustling 24 seven to run my business like, it can start to get a little bit easier, you can take a day off or a week off. And know that things won’t fall apart. You can just if you need to push things back by a week and do something easier this week, because you like it’s cool. It’s all going to happen in time. This is the most difficult work to do, I think I mean, let’s be honest, it’s all difficult. But yeah, it’s it’s been a struggle for me. But I’m really starting to go with the flow here. And it’s just funny how once I started to go with the flow, nothing fell apart. And I was more present. And this is the powerful thing with personal branding, too, not just personal branding, like we building a brand building a business, we do need to be present, because we need to be connected with our audience, we need to be building relationships. If you are too busy stuck on the hamster wheel, you’re not going to be having those conversations, you’re not going to notice opportunities when they come up, you know, you’re just you’re just going to be in reactive mode all the time. I’ve just got so many clients that it’s taking them so many years to finally get to this point where they’re like, hold on, I don’t have to be so panicked, like it can, it can be more fun. And there’s room for not having perfect days. And I’m not failing just because the day wasn’t perfect.
But this is what I mean, like this work, it’s just as important to do when you’re first starting out as it is if you’re 30 years in to your like entrepreneurial journey. Because if any of these pieces are missing, you’re not going to be fully living and growing and developing the way that you want to be the way that you know, when you’re not going to be able to tap into your full potential, there’s gonna be something holding you back, there’s going to be a layer of self sabotage not fully being present, etc, etc. This has been an epic episode. My goodness. Obviously, I’ve given you lots of questions, not necessarily all the answers, because as you probably figured out, a lot of the answers do need to come from within and there’s, there’s work to be done on going work. And then obviously, we need to pair all of this inner work and then match it. Without strategy, like, the more we can get to know ourselves and our audiences, then the more we can really build offers and content that truly align that make a huge difference. And I just like no brainers, and all of that.
So, we’re going to talk more about this in coming weeks, don’t worry, I’m not just going to like open up this loop and then leave you hanging. But I’m hoping that this at least brought some awareness of where you need to focus moving forward, like you know, your 2021 focus, maybe you’ll have a little bit of a clearer idea of what it should be moving forward. Now, as I said, I have been revisiting what I’m doing because of all of this work. And I’m really excited about some things that I’m going to be announcing very soon, very soon. So I actually have a bonus episode that is going to go live on Friday. Yes, that aligns with Black Friday. And you’re gonna want to hear it because we’ve got answers.
